Washingtonia filifera, the California fan palm grows natively in canyons and oasis in Southern California. It is a tall palm reaching 20 meters in height with a large and straight trunk. One of its main characteristics is that it keeps a skirt of dead palms which protects it from frost. Since it is native from desert areas, the California palm is very hardy to drought and moderate frost. It is widely cultivated all over the world in tropical to Mediterranean climates.
