Polypodium vulgare, the common polypody fern, is (together with the Male fern) one of the most common ferns. It is widely distributed all over the northern hemisphere, from Mediterranean to sub-artic climate. It is mainly found in forested areas, but it can be sometimes spotted in open fields when humidity conditions are favourable for its development. Polypodium vulgare is a small fern, rarely growing above 50 cm in height, with the particularity to climb on trees, cliffs, and stone walls. This fern is sometimes used for landscaping shadowy gardens.
