Umbrella acacia
Vachellia tortilis, the umbrella acacia, is native to Africa, all the way up to the Arabic peninsula. It is a deciduous tree of approx. 20 meters in height. The umbrella acacias, together with the continental baobab, are regular features of the African savannah landscapes. The shape and dimensions of this species are linked to the local conditions, the roughness and the actual pruning and damages caused by giraffes and elephants. For most people, the acacia is usually pictured as an umbrella like tree which can be found in iconic Kenyan landscapes. However, in most instances, it grows as a small bushy tree, still instantly recognizable though through its flat canopy.
