Umbrella acacia

Umbrella acacia
(Vachellia tortilis)

from Africa

Vachellia tortilis, the umbrella acacia is native from Africa up to the Arabic peninsula. It is a deciduous tree of approx. 20 meters in height. The umbrella acacia, together with the continental baobab are regular features of the African savannah landscapes. The shape and dimensions of this species are linked to the local conditions (where it grows), the roughness and the actual pruning and damages from giraffes and elephants. In the collective consciousness, the acacia is usually pictured as the umbrella like trees that can be found in iconic Kenyan landscapes. However, in most instances, it grows as a small bushy tree, still instantly recognizable by its flat canopy.
