Picea mariana, the Black Spruce, is the most emblematic and common species of arctic and sub-arctic landscapes all over Canada and Alaska where it covers very large areas of land. The black spruce might be the king of adaptation, as it easily acclimates to any soil conditions and to the strongest frost. It can grow as a slim tree up to 20 meters in height in the South of Canada as well as a dense short and bushy tree of 6 meters in height in the far North.
