Washingtonia filifera, the California fan palm, grows natively in canyons and oases in Southern California. It is a tall palm which can grow up to 20 meters in height with a large and straight trunk. One of its main characteristics is its skirt of dead palms which protects it from frost. Since it is native to desert areas, the California palm is very hardy to drought and moderate frost. It is widely cultivated all over the world in tropical to mediterranean climates.
