Ficus carica, the Common Fig tree, is well-known all over Europe, Middle East and North Africa. This unique species of deciduous Ficus was so widely spread thanks to humans since the beginning of times that its real origin remains uncertain. It is assumed to be in Mesopotamia, though. Ficus carica grows either as a small gnarled deciduous tree or as a big bush with up to 5 meters in height. The figs are both edible and ornamental and they turn purple at maturity.
