Populus nigra ‘Italica’, the Lombardy poplar or Italian poplar, is probably the most well-known form of black poplars. It is a fast growing, 30 meter tall tree, characterized by a more or less narrow columnar silhouette. This makes it very popular for the constitution of hedges and other alignments. For this use, the Lombardy poplar was imported in all the temperate countries where it still punctuates the landscape from Chile to North America as well as landscapes in Australia or New Zealand.
