Populus nigra ‘Italica’, the Lombardy poplar or Italian poplar, is probably the best known form of black poplar. It is a tree of 30 meters, very fast growing, characterized by a more or less narrow columnar silhouette which makes it very popular for the constitution of hedges and alignments. For this use the Lombardy poplar was imported in all the temperate countries where it still punctuates the landscape from Chile to North America as in Australia or New Zealand.
