Picea abies, the Norway spruce, is probably the most well-known spruce in the world. Native to Europe and West Asia, the Norway spruce is also one of the most important sources for timber worldwide in temperate to cold climates. It is appreciated for is hardiness and fast growth rate (it can commonly grow up to 40 meters in height). Picea abies is one of the oldest vegetation species known on earth, with a specimen in Fulufjället National Park, Sweden, estimated to be 9550 years old.
