Dryoperis filix-mas, the Male fern, is (together with the Common Polypody fern) one of the most common ferns and it is widely distributed all over the northern hemisphere, from mediterranean to sub-artic climates. It is mainly found in forested areas but can sometimes be spotted in open fields when humidity conditions are favourable for its development. Dryopteris filix-mas is a 1,2 m tall fern which is sometimes also used for landscaping shadowy gardens.
