Opuntia ficus-indica, the barbary fig, is the most famous prickly pear cactus native to Mexico and Southern USA. Much appreciated for its edible fruits, this cactus has quickly spread throughout the mediterranean and tropical world to the point of becoming invasive or emblematic, as in North Africa or the Middle East. In its country of origin, Opuntia ficus-indica can grow into a small tree up to 5 meters tall, but more often, it grows into a bushy shape.
