Vaccinium myrtillus, the bilberry, is a small deciduous shrub, 10 to 50 cm high, native to the alpine and boreal moors and forests of the Northern Hemisphere, where it can cover large areas. Its fruit, the famous bilberry, is one of the most popular berries. It is harvested exclusively in the wild, as the bilberry is resistant to cultivation, unlike its cousins the blueberries, vaccinium angustifolium and corymbosum, which are much larger and exclusively North American.
