Pinus pinaster lone is a maritime pine specially developed for solitary specimens. It grows in scrubland or in urban parks. Although naturally restricted to a limited area of south-western Europe and north-western Africa, mainly the Iberian Peninsula and around the Mediterranean, it is now one of the most widely cultivated pines in the world for its forestry qualities. Introduced into South Africa, it has become an invasive plant. Pinus pinaster is a tree of variable size and shape that can reach a height of 35 m. It can grow by the sea or at altitudes of up to 2,000 m in the Mediterranean region or in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains.
