Rhododendron catawbiense, the moutain rosebay, is a wild species of Rhododendron growing in the northern Appalachians from Allabama to West Virginia, generally in undergrowth but sometimes also in open areas near summits. It is also found in the British Isles. The moutain rosebay can reach a height of 3m, with purplish-pink flowers opening in late spring and dark green leaves. It is one of the most popular rhododendrons for its hardiness and ease of care. As a result, it has become the parent of many hardy hybrids with European or Asian rhododendrons.
