Cyperus alternifolius, the umbrella sedge, is a tall cyperaceae species, originating from Madagascar. It can grow up to 2 meters in height. Surprisingly, despite its tropical origin, this species is much more rustic than its cousin the Nile papyrus. It is therefore not uncommon to find the umbrella sedge even in milder temperate regions. The umbrella sedge is considered as an invasive plant species in many aquatic environments around the world where it can cause siltation.
