Pinus pinaster forest is a maritime pine specially designed for specimen growing in forest. Although maritime pine is naturally confined to a limited area of south-western Europe and north-western Africa, mainly on the Iberian Peninsula and around the Mediterranean basin, it is now one of the most widely cultivated pines in the world for its forestry qualities. Introduced into South Africa, it has become an invasive plant. Pinus pinaster is a tree of variable size and shape that can reach 35m. It can grow by the sea or at altitudes of up to 2,000 m in the Mediterranean region or in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains.
