Rhododendron ferrugineum, the alpenrose, is a wild species of Rhododendron native to the Alps and Pyrenees, where it can cover large areas of alpine moorland. The alpenrose is a low, spreading shrub rarely exceeding 1 m in height. In early summer, it is covered in a profusion of pink-red bells masking its small, elliptical, dark-green leaves. However, despite its undeniable aesthetic qualities, the Iron Rhododendron is resistant to cultivation.
