Great rhododendron

Great rhododendron
(Rhododendron maximum)

Rhododendron maximum, the great rhododendron, is a dominant understorey species of the Appalachians, covering a vast area from Georgia to Maine. It is a very large shrub that can eventually grow into a small 10 m tree. It is probably the largest Rhododendron in the western world, hence its name. The flowers are usually white and open in summer after pink buds. More rarely, some natural specimens show flowers that can even be dark pink. Rhododendron maximum is quite adaptable in cultivation and particularly resistant to the cold. Sometimes hybridized in horticulture with Rhododendron catawbiense and Rhododendron ponticum.
