Lupinus polyphyllus, the large-leaved lupine, is one of the most known lupines, and one of the original species used to produce numerous hybrids such as the Russel lupine cultivars. It is a tall species which grows up to 1.5 meters in height and it grows isolated or in small groups in grass fields, swamps and riverbanks, from Western North America up to Alaska. Lupinus polyphyllus is also naturalized in many fresh climates, e.g. in the UK or in New Zealand. It is also one of the most emblematic plants of the Rocky Mountains.
