Salix alba, the white willow, is one of the most common trees along the riverine forests of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. It is a fast-growing willow tree that can reach 25 meters in height and has a wide variety of ports. Salix alba is also a pioneer species, favoring bright areas along the river, where it is found in competition with the common alder (Alnus glutinosa), and black poplar (Polulus nigra). Finally, the white willow is a very popular species in parks and gardens for its fine silvery foliage.
