Salix alba, the white willow, is one of the most common trees along the riverine forests of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. It is a fast-growing willow tree which can reach 25 meters in height. Salix alba is also a pioneer species, favoring bright areas along the river, where it is found in competition with the common alder (Alnus glutinosa), and black poplar (Populus nigra). The white willow is also very popular in parks and gardens for its fine silvery foliage.
